DC Statehood Project
In this transformative project during DC Commission Art All Night event, the idea of Washington, D.C., becoming a state is explored through the collaborative contributions of the city's natives. Participants were asked, "What does statehood mean to you?" and their responses were captured through writing and painting on die-cut panels. These panels, representing each ward of the city, were assembled to form the shape of D.C.
To further enhance the project, the addition of three-dimensional forms is proposed. Sculptures and interactive installations would create a more immersive experience, allowing viewers to engage with the artwork from different angles. This would amplify the impact of the collective voices and could be showcased in galleries or public spaces, fostering dialogue and understanding.
Overall, this project celebrates diversity and community engagement while envisioning a future where D.C. stands as a state. It emphasizes the power of art to provoke thought, inspire change, and unite people in shaping their own cities and states.
